Vitamin B12

By May 25, 2022No Comments

Do you have headaches, insomnia, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, or pale skin?  If so, there is a good chance that you are deficient in B12.

What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is a vital nutrient your body needs but cannot produce on its own. It is involved in producing red blood cells, DNA synthesis, and supporting healthy, functioning nerves. Its role in cell production also makes vitamin B12 essential to supporting stronger hair, skin, and nails. Sources are in your diet or supplements.

B12 Deficiency and Anemia

One of vitamin B12’s most important jobs in the body is producing red blood cells. Red blood cells transport oxygen throughout our bodies, including our tissues and organs. If you have a B12 deficiency, your body produces fewer red blood cells. As a consequence, some of your most vital systems become oxygen-deprived, which can result in feelings of weakness, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

These symptoms may also point to a more serious underlying condition known as pernicious anemia. People with pernicious anemia lack the intrinsic factor protein that enables them to successfully absorb vitamin B12, even if they get enough from their diet.

Vitamin B12 is essential for building blood cells and maintaining healthy nerve cells in the body. As many as 15 percent of people in the United States have a vitamin B12 deficiency, which can lead to anemia. Symptoms of B12 deficiency include weakness, fatigue, constipation, weight loss, and loss of appetite. Deficiency is also damaging to the nervous system and can cause depression, confusion, and dementia.

Natural sources rich in vitamin B12 are dairy products, fish, meat, and beef liver and clams are particularly rich in this nutrient. This type of vitamin B can also be found in fortified items like breakfast cereals and nutritional yeast.

The good news is that taking vitamin B12 supplements regularly can lower your chances of developing a deficiency. And that’s not the only benefit of taking vitamin B12; it’s also essential for maintaining a healthy immune system.  With Covid being such a situation, your immune system should be up in fighting shape.

B12 is a key player in the immune system as it increases your white blood cell count. White blood cells are involved in protecting the body against both infectious diseases and foreign invaders. When your count is low, you’re more at risk for pathogens entering your system. What does this tell you while you are swimming in a society foundering and floundering in a pandemic? You better be up in fighting shape, and your immune system had better be bolstered up by any means possible. So laying in a supply of B12 is the thing to do. Pills are sometimes difficult to swallow. Then there are gummies and sprays and liquid drops.

And it is reported that liquid B12 is the way to go because taken sublingually, or under the tongue, they are easier and faster to absorb.
