The Answer is MCT, Medium Chain Triglycerides

First, what are triglycerides? I don’t want these articles to sound too complex and complicated, as they can because definitions containing many words we don’t use regularly just confuse you.  So, generally, triglycerides are a type of fat.  It is actually the most common type of fat in your body, and you get it from butter, oils, and other fats you consume.  You eat it, and if your body doesn’t need it right away, it stores them in fat cells. When the body needs energy, it releases them and is carried to feed your tissues throughout your body.  They should be maintained at a moderate, not too low nor too high level, to maintain proper nutritional level. At either extreme, it could be unhealthy.

High triglycerides are caused by eating more calories than you burn, particularly if you have lots of sugar in your diet.  Other causes are being overweight, smoking cigarettes or too much alcohol consumption.

Triglyceride is just a technical term for fat

Triglycerides have two main purposes. They’re either burned for energy or stored as body fat. They’re metabolized differently than the long-chain triglycerides (LCT) found in most other foods. MCT oil is a supplement that contains a lot of these fats and is claimed to have many health benefits.

Medium-chain triglycerides are metabolized differently

Given the shorter chain length of MCTs, they break down quickly and are absorbed by the body instantly.  MCTs go straight to your liver, where they can be used as an instant energy source or turned into ketones. Ketones are substances produced when the liver breaks down large amounts of fat. In contrast with regular fatty acids, ketones can cross via the blood in the arteries to the brain. This provides an alternative energy source for the brain, which ordinarily uses glucose for fuel.  Since they are shorter in chain length, meaning fewer links to metabolize, they break down easily and are absorbed right away by the body.  They go straight to the liver and can be immediately turned into an energy source

Given the shorter chain length of MCTs, they’re rapidly broken down and absorbed into the body. Unlike longer-chain fatty acids, MCTs go straight to your liver, where they can be used as an instant energy source or turned into ketones.  Because the calories contained in MCTs are more efficiently turned into energy and used by the body, they’re less likely to be stored as fat. The bottom line is that since the MCT is digested quicker than the LCT, it gets to be used as energy first. If there’s an excess of MCT, they too will eventually be stored as fat.
