Free Radicals II

By October 25, 2022No Comments

Free is not always a good thing. In this case, it can kill you

In our last session, we discussed how free radicals are formed and some of their causes of them. Today we will talk more about how they proliferate, what that can do to your body, and how they are controlled and valuable when kept in the balance needed by the body. And finally, we will discuss antioxidants, and how they work.

And the beat goes on

We left the dance when a fight broke out after our electron friend lost his electron girlfriend to a better-looking electron guy. And then there were loose electrons everywhere trying to hook up with a partner electron to keep a balance. Therefore, the body was crowded with the free radicals the ruckus created. As seen in the last article, many things can cause this. And if the person is as busy trying to survive this hectic existence, he or she will have more than enough stimuli to create this phenomenon.

Oxidants and Antioxidants

What is an Oxidant?

Oxidation is defined as a process in which an electron is removed from a molecule during a chemical reaction. What happens in oxidation? During oxidation, there is a transfer of electrons. In other words, during oxidation, there is a loss of electrons. Here is where our Tennessee Waltzer lost his love, leaving him alone as a singular electron throwing the whole kit and kaboodle out of balance.

Real Life Example of oxidation

Rust is oxidation.  If you find a piece of metal that is rusty, the formation of rust is oxidation. If permitted to remain in the place it was, without moving for a long period of time, the rust would literally consume it, eat it up. So if one has metal tools or useful metal items, one has to be constantly alert that they don’t rust and become useless. Some alloyed high-grade metals are rust-proof. So if unattended, the body can become useless and develop serious diseases, for the damage to the body is like rust on metal that can stop the vital parts from moving.

As usual, mother nature has an answer. Free radicals can cause harm if their levels become too high in your body. They’re linked to multiple illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Free Radical EMS

What controls them and why does the body create them in the first place?  Knowing that, mother nature created antioxidants.  Antioxidants are molecules that fight free radicals in your body. Your body has its own antioxidant defenses to keep free radicals in check.

After the hullabaloo at the dance in Tennessee, the body sent an EMS ambulance to patch up the victims, as she has done since the beginning of time, which is filled with spare electrons to balance and equalize their pairings, and antioxidant bandages. Now all is well, the waltz starts up and everyone is happily paired and dancing the dance of life—cellular joy.

Why Free Radicals?

It is part of the plan. Free radicals are constantly being formed in your body.

Without antioxidants, free radicals would cause serious harm very quickly, eventually resulting in death. However, free radicals also serve important functions that are essential for health. For example, your immune cells use free radicals to fight infections. It is like having an antagonistic employee who is too valuable to fire. So you keep him but keep him on a leash. As a result, your body needs to maintain a certain balance of free radicals and antioxidants. When free radicals outnumber antioxidants, it can lead to a state called oxidative stress.

Prolonged oxidative stress can damage your DNA and other important molecules in your body. Sometimes it even leads to cell death. Damage to your DNA increases your risk of cancer, and some scientists have theorized that it plays a pivotal role in the aging process. I think of it like injecting the body with disease to keep from getting the disease. What you get is maintained balance. Can you imagine this going on inside of you 24/7?

Coming up

In the next blog coming up I will discuss Oxidative stress and give more examples of the creation and care of free radicals and their happy twin antioxidants and their continuing waltz now across Texas. So bear with me and here comes the finalization and how to disarm the killer, oxidative stress caused by the ongoing conflict between antioxidants and free radicals. Game still on.
